Housewarming party
(publicize your website)
You can build the best house in the world and watch it
sink rapidly into obscurity if you don’t send out guest
invitations regularly. You should include your Internet
address (URL) on your business cards, company stationery,
yellow page advertisement, e-mail signature file,
promotional pens, cups and other give-a-ways, and generally
mention or write the URL every chance you get.
List or register your site with
the top 10 search engines and repeat the procedure every
month. Most search sites provide instructions on how to list
your site. Some of the major search
sites charge for listings and you have to decide
whether the cost is worth the potential return you might
receive from the listings.
There are numerous businesses on the Internet that will
register your URL for free with some of the popular search
engines, but most of them try to bait you into paying for
expanded services.
Never get scammed into paying businesses that
claim they will place your house in the top 20 of various
search sites. Do the math. If they have more than 20
clients, somebody is being taken to the cleaners. On the
Internet, “If it sounds too good to be true,” it is and you
will waste your hard-earned dollars.
The criteria used to rank homes in the major search
engines are complex and differ from service to service.
The best way to learn to design your pages for potentially
high rankings is to read the ranking
criteria of each particular searchInternet sites that claim they will get you listed
with 2,000 or more search engines are just plain lying. You
might be listed with 150 real search engines (if there are
even that many legitimate ones), but you probably won’t
notice any increase in visitors to your house. You will
however, notice the sudden increase in spam
e-mail. You can purchase the same software these services
use to publicize your house, but you are still throwing your
money down the drain. Most Internet travelers still use the
largest search engines like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Go.com, Altavista
and DMOZ.
If you are operating a
business site, never underestimate the
effectiveness of invitations to your site in local
newspapers, radio and even television. Don’t pay someone
else to do it. You can easily do it yourself. it. You can easily do it yourself.

search engines on the Internet. Register your site with as
many of these organizations as possible and you’re off to a
good start. Be patient. Nothing happens overnight. Obtaining
a listing in a search engine can take from two to six
months. Be patient.
